Week of November 23, 2009-writing exercise

You are in a park, sitting under a tree. What do you see? What is going on around you or what is going on inside you?

Writing exercises suggestions

This is where you can leave suggestions for writing exercises. The excercises can be a description of something, a diagogue between characters, something you overheard, or a rememberance. But each sample should also convey some thematic emotion or ambiance.

Examples:

Describe your neighborhood, your house, your friends, your boss, your life, etc.

What would happen if ????????

I remember the day I did this.... or so and so told me that.....

Describe peace, happiness, anger, sorrow, empathy, joy, etc.

Let's come up with some good ones. A new excercise will be posted every week.

Suggessted continuing saga beginning story scenarios

This is a place to write your suggestions or opening scene for the next continuing saga collaboration.

Desert Trails cont'd

This is the beginning of a story that writers can continue. Write as much or as often as you want. You must continue the story scenario from the previous writer, but you can then take it in any direction you choose. Create or kill any characters you want.

Ahead is a long straight road into a desert of ancient volcanoes, snakes, and cacti. All is quiet and still, then suddenly the blarring roar of a amped up Harley pierces the silence. It screams into view speeding by, then dissappears into a dot on the distant horizon. All of a sudden, the driver sees a long snake up ahead crossing the road. It's length completely covers the road from it's head to it's tail. The driver reacts out of instinct and swerves off the road to miss running over the snake. Once he vears off the road into the sand and rocks, he loses control of the bike and lands on his side with the bike on top of him. He manages to pull his injured leg out from underneath the bike and stumbles to his feet. He wearily pulls the bike up right and notices that both tires are flat. He mounts the bike and tries to start it. It almost turns over, then dies. Fluid gushes into the dry desert like a bleeding wound. The biker slowly pulls off his helmet and reveals a twenty something kid, JAKE. Jake: Shit, this sucks.

WHAT'S EATING YOU?- A short screenplay.

I will edit this post daily with additions to the story as they are posted on Twitter. Here you will be able to read the complete story if you miss an installment.

1) A car races down a street and swerves erratically as it barely misses a man crossing the street. The man walks up to the entrance gate.
2) A woman is standing at the gate frantically pushing all the buttons attempting to enter. A black scarf covers her head and she is wearing a coat.

About this blog and how it works.

Welcome my blog. This site is a place to showcase my writing but it is also a place for writers to come experiment, play, and practice the craft of writing. Just as a musician practices scales or an artist paints a still life, portrait, or landscape; writers must exercise their palette of words, images, and emotions.

Several things will be going on here. First I am adding each day a line or two from a work of mine as I am posting it on Twitter. This could be a screenplay, poem, prose, or libretto. It will be a continuing saga.

Next, I am eliciting the visiting writers to add to another continuing saga that may or may not, go on twitter as well. This story will be started with a scenario that can then go in any direction the contributing writers take it. As one story ends, we will start a new one and I encourage starting scenario ideas to be left in comments.

And finally, we will do writing exercises that can be posted here and critiqued by readers. As you post your exercises, I will place them in their own blog so comments can be added. Be sure and write your username under the title of your post. Please leave suggestions for future writing exercises in the comments as well.

I will also publish articles on various writing subjects and resources. This should be a fun and interactive website and a great place to come a write when you need to practice your scales.
